Books in Malaysia

By pak - Posted on 31 January 2010

Yesterday after walking around Kuala Lumpur and not really achieving much (well actually shopping -- but nothing really interested me), I decided that today I was going to buy some books on some topics that I was interested to learn a little more about.  These topics being Macroeconomics, Microeconomics, Marketing, and Marketing Research. I wanted to learn a little more about these as my new role in a product company means that my skills needed a real refresh.

Looking for books in Malaysia, there's an interesting thing happening here.  There's a large message plastered on the front page: "This book is not for sale in the US."  Now why is that?

I remember when I was a kid: I had these chinese school text books.  Almost everyone in the class would start the year WITHOUT text books.  The idea being, the first kid who had BOUGHT the text book, would lend it to everyone else, who would photocopy it!

Apparently this asian attitude still continues today.  The result being that you can get university text books for 1/6th the price compared to the US.

Needless to say, I happily filled up my suitcase with books....
